Since Apple’s “Spring Forward” event, many have been talking about the 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition and it’s extremely high price. Some have speculated that the starting price of $10,000 for the Apple Watch Edition will have a small market, while others have suggested that the Apple Watch Edition is not worth the price.
Now it seems that even some Apple employees believe that the price tag of $10,000 is not worth it for the 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition. Two days after details of the Apple Watch was released, it was spotted at the Apple Store in Grand Central Station in Manhattan that several employees had been telling customers that the Apple Watch Edition was not worth the price.
Later these two employees were having a meeting with one of the managers and being told that they should not be making these statements to Apple customers. The Apple manager later goes on to tell theses two employees should keep their personal opinions to themselves and help try to convince potential customers to buy the Apple Watch. The manager explained that if this was any other company, that both of these employees would be fired immediately. During the conversation, the manager later explains that there are many people willing to spend over $10,000 on a watch to show how much wealth they have.
Besides Apple employees themselves, there have many other critics of the Apple Watch Edition including Digg founder and technology investor Kevin Rose. As he wrote on TechCrunch, he believes that the high-end wearable computer seems to have no real purpose other than being “perfect for douchebags.” He goes on to say that if Apple were to offer, for instance, “an extra sensor or higher resolution display that has yet to hit high enough production volumes to make it throughout the rest of the line,” it could go a ways toward justifying the higher price.
The Apple Watch goes on pre-order beginning April 10 and is scheduled to ship in the United States, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and United Kingdom on April 24.
Time will only tell if people will purchase the Apple Watch Edition. It’s expected that the Apple Watch Sport and the Apple Watch will be targeted towards main stream customers while the Apple Watch Edition will be aimed at higher net worth individuals who are use to spending thousands on a watch.
